How to plan a perfect ski trip to the Northern Catskills

How to plan a perfect ski trip to the Northern Catskills

So you want to go on a skiing (or snowboarding) trip to the Catskills.  Turns out, there’s a lot you should know before you go—from how the most popular mountains in the region differ from one another to where you should dine and stay while you’re up there. Luckily, we’ve got the lowdown on the most important planning tips before you throw those winter clothes in the back of a car and drive 2-3 hours upstate. (Here’s a quick one right up top: plan a stop at Woodbury Common on your way up or down. You could come back to the city with some great mountain memories and a half-off dutch oven!)  Whether you’re sticking to the bunny slopes or ride-or-die black diamonds, there are enough things to do in the Great Northern Catskills to make any winter trip worthwhile. RECOMMENDED: The best ski resorts near NYC The two main destinations for skiing and snowboarding in the region are Hunter Mountain and Windham Mountain. Hunter Mountain is the less expensive option, a day on the slopes there can sometimes be half the cost as one at Windham. That extra money gets you a greater variety of runs at Windham as well as generally better grooming conditions—the runs there can be less icy than Hunter. Both mountains have stunning views and decent sized runs for the region. Hunter has a spectacularly rocky cliff face which adds to the overall ambiance, and the crowd at Hunter is more diverse with Windham attracting more families.  Photograph: Courtesy Hunter Mountain In addition to its gorgeous

Míng, aka Sax of Shaolin (@saxofshaolin), is the confluence between East and West. As a saxophonist, composer and bandleader, he seeks to merge the musical lineages of his upbringing. He fuses American, South East Asian and Afro-Caribbean music to create something that sounds like a dance between the ancestors of all three traditions. This is not only an effort to experiment with sound but also to find common ground between far-flung cultures. It’s an approach that has developed, instinctually, from his experience as an immigrant and a Hakka Chinese, a nomad by blood. New Yorkers can save almost $40K a year by living with a partner

New Yorkers can save almost $40K a year by living with a partner

Add this to the list of why being single in New York is tough. A new study by Streeteasy analyzes how much couples in the city can save on rent by cohabitating in a one-bedroom—based on current rental prices from Q4 2021. The results may have you re-downloading a dating app or five. RECOMMENDED: The best date ideas in NYC According to the study, couples who live together in New York can save a staggering $14,400 per year, per person by renting a one-bedroom. (That’s a lot of gold pizza!) That number was reached based on the median citywide one-bedroom rental price: $2,400. That means the average couple in the city would save $28,800 a year by sharing a one-bedroom. If you break it down by borough, the picture is even bleaker for single Manhattanites. Cohabitations savings jump up to $19,500 per person there—or a whopping $39,000 total. In Queens, the number lands at $11,700 per person while it’s $13,200 in Brooklyn.  Want a more detailed breakdown on how much money you could potentially save by shacking up in a one-bedroom with a loved one in your neighborhood? Check out this full interactive map on Streeteasy’s site which breaks it down on a much more granular level. Still, there’s plenty to do to celebrate your singledom in the city right now! Here are some of our favorite way to do so right now.

Subwaydle is an addictive, subway-inspired take on Wordle

Subwaydle is an addictive, subway-inspired take on Wordle

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few W-E-E-K-S, you’ve probably heard of Wordle, the highly addictive daily puzzle that involves doing your best to guess a random five-letter word in a set number of tries. Since taking the world by storm, the game has been purchased by The New York Times, which is about the closest a brain teaser can come to having a Cinderella story. While the Times has announced that the uber-popular daily word game will remain outside of a paywall and ad-free for now, there’s no guarantee it will stay that way in the future. Luckily, a new digital puzzle game has garnered attention this week from outlets including Kotaku, Second Ave. Sagas and more that transfers the format of Wordle to the world of the NYC subway. (It's only slightly more difficult than deciphering the meaning of a delayed train announcement.) Subwaydle, is a browser game where you’re given six chances to guess a subway trip with two different transfers. Similar to Wordle’s requirement that every guess be a real word, Subwaydle requires every guess to be an actual subway ride one could take underground in NYC—that is, of course, if all the trains are running as they should. If a train line isn’t part of the route it’s displayed as gray, if it is in the route but currently in the wrong spot it will be shaded yellow and if it’s both the right line and the right spot it will show up as green. A quick stop at a subway bar is not included on any trip. The game was invented b

A massive winter ice palace is coming to the Adirondacks this winter

Another “cool” event is happening in New York this week that could be just the ticket for those looking for a unique winter weekend getaway from NYC. The 2022 Saranac Lake Winter Carnival kicks off on February 4 in the upstate town located in the Adirondacks and lasts until February 13. Billed as “the oldest event of its kind in the eastern United States,” the annual event has been happening for over 120 years! (We’re guessing the fest’s many ice sculptures and creations are quite a bit younger.) Photograph: Courtesy Saranac Lake Winter Carnival This year, the carnival’s theme is “Totally 80s,” and the centerpiece will be an Ice Palace made from two-ton ice blocks cut from Lake Flower’s Pontiac Bay. The palace is built each year by a group of volunteers and gets a unique look every time with ice carvings, ice thrones and more. (Speaking of Ice Castles: You can find some in Lake George this winter as well.) In addition to gawking at the icy man-made wonders, guests can hit up the outdoorsy fest for snowshoeing, Nordic ski racing, skating races and even a Ladies Frypan Toss. Live performances will also be taking place throughout the festival, along with two parades, movie screenings and a chocolate festival.   On top of all that, if you make it up there for the festivities some of the best ski resorts near NYC are just a short drive away including Gore Mountain and Whiteface Mountain. Big news: Governors Island will now be open year-round!

Big news: Governors Island will now be open year-round!

Like many New Yorkers, there’s a good chance that summers in the city are synonymous with day trips to Governors Island for you. While that may still be true, you’ll now be able to visit the island during the summer, fall, winter and spring! It's a trip for all seasons! Mayor de Blasio and the Trust for Governors Island announced that the popular island will now be open to the public all year long. Starting this year, New Yorkers and all visitors will be able to visit the island and take part in its arts and cultural offerings all year—for the first time in history! “The COVID-19 pandemic has created an unprecedented opportunity to reimagine public space in this city – and now, we’re proud to keep the crown jewel of our harbor open to New Yorkers all year round,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “From expanded ferry service, to more amenities than ever, to year-round visitors from all over the city, there’s no better time to experience and invest in Governors Island.”   Until the Coney Island route launches, Governors Island will be a stop in between Sunset Park/Brooklyn Army Terminal and Red Hook/Atlantic Basin. This service officially begins on January 24. On summer weekends, NYC Ferry will continue to serve Governors Island as a dedicated shuttle from Pier 11. Additionally, Governors Island will continue to run summer weekend shuttles from Brooklyn Bridge Park-Pier 6 and Red Hook.  When NYC Ferry’s Coney Island route launches in late 2022, the South Brooklyn route will terminate

An immersive ice wonderland is coming to New York this winter

An immersive ice wonderland is coming to New York this winter

A new winter attraction coming to New York this weekend looks pretty cool. “Ice Castles in Lake George” is set to open in the upstate town on Sunday, January 23, and the magical wintry landscape may be just enough to instigate a drive up north. (That is, if you need a little more than the frozen fountain in Bryant Park to get your winter wonderland fix.) Ice artisans are currently working around the clock to finish up the seasonal sculptures and you can check out some photos of the works-in-progress below. Tickets for the attractions go on sale at this website starting tonight at 8pm.  Photograph: Courtesy AJ Mellor/Ice Castles The “Ice Castles” experience can currently be found at five locations across the U.S., including this brand-new location in Lake George. For $20–$27, a general admission ticket will let you immerse yourself in the icy caverns and walk beneath massive archways full of dangling icicles. Visitors will also be able to crawl through ice tunnels, slide down ice slides and lose themselves in an ice maze like a more Insta-friendly version of the end of The Shining. The castles also include some cool LED-list illuminated ice sculptures, frozen thrones, frozen fountains and more. You can check out all the information on the new attraction here. (Don't forget to pack gloves!) Looking for more fun ideas for ways to get out of the city? Check out our roundup of the best winter getaways from NYC.

The fountain in Bryant Park has officially frozen over

The fountain in Bryant Park has officially frozen over

Over the weekend, New Yorkers were treated with the wonderful monkey’s paw situation of being both gifted with a long weekend in the middle of the doldrums of January as well as weather so cold it was almost impossible to step outside.  Those who did venture out into the arctic wonderland may have spotted one of the city’s most reliable signs that “Winter™” has officially arrived: the fountain at Bryant Park has officially frozen over. That’s right, NYC's annual Canada Goose migration is complete. Check out some video below of the dramatic wintry spectacle. If you’d like to head to midtown to check it out for yourself, consider making some time for ice skating or even ice bumper cars. (They’re a lot of fun!) View this post on Instagram A post shared by NYCgo (@nycgo) If you, sensibly, would rather head somewhere warm this week, try planning a night out at one of our favorite bars in NYC with fireplaces for a toasty toast. The only ice you’ll have to deal with there will be in your drink.

10 fascinating secrets of NYC’s Grand Central Terminal

Originally published in January 2017. More than 750,000 people visit Grand Central a daily; some to shop, some to dine, but most to hit the rails. Beyond being a pulsating artery of New York City, the transit hub is also a spectacular work of architecture with an undeniable beauty and an incredible history. RECOMMENDED: Full guide to Grand Central Terminal in NYC Opened in 1913, the station was designed by architecture firms Reed & Stem and Warren & Wetmore in a Beauxs-Art style and has become one of the city’s most celebrated landmarks. However, while it’s difficult not to be entranced by the station’s grandeur today, this hasn’t always been the case. Like most of New York City landmarks, Grand Central has fallen in and out of favor over the last century, and as one might expect, it harbors some fascinating tales. From a massive screw-up in the celestial ceiling to a thwarted Nazi plan to blow the station to smithereens to the terminal’s surprising Donald Trump connection, ahead are the top 10 secrets of Grand Central Terminal.  Image: Courtesy New York Public Library 1. Grand Central has been rebuilt three times The Grand Central you see now is not the original building. Indeed, the terminal as it exists today is actually the third iteration of the structure. The original station was known as the “Grand Central Depot” and erected in 1871. The depot served the region’s three major lines, but the city’s rapidly growing population ultimately led to its demolition in 1900. So

NYC Ferry kicks off the new year with a brand-new stop

Today’s frigid temps may not have you dreaming of a nautical commute. Still, the way the weather’s been so far in 2022, tomorrow may just have you reaching for your stripes, boat shoes and NYC Ferry app. When that happens, you’ll be able to take advantage of a brand-new destination on the official NYC Ferry route. RECOMMENDED: NYC Ferry is starting its first-ever ferry service on the Hudson River As one of his last acts in office, Mayor De Blasio presided over the grand opening late last week of a new NYC Ferry stop at Throgs Neck in the Bronx. The new stop extends the city’s Soundview Route service with a stop at Ferry Point Park.  With the addition of the new stop, the Soundview Route now runs from Throgs Neck through Soundview, East 90th Street, East 34th Street, Stuyvesant Cove and down to Wall Street/Pier 11. From the first to last stop, the entire traveling time on the route is 60 minutes, dramatically shortening the commute times for many New Yorkers.  “The Throgs Neck ferry landing is a game changer for Bronx commuters,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio at the event. “This landing will provide affordable, accessible, and time saving transport, expanding transit options for all New Yorkers, further connecting the five boroughs and building a recovery for all of us.” Timetables for the Soundview route, and a map of all NYC Ferry routes, can be found here.

Brooke Averi, a Radio City Rockette, shares her favorite local spots in NYC

In many ways, this holiday season is a return to form for some of the city’s most iconic December events and activities. Chief among them is The Christmas Spectacular starring the Radio City Rockettes which is once again dazzling audiences at Radio City Music Hall with high kicks, plenty of glitter, advanced projections and beautiful music. In honor of the return of one of the city’s best things to do for Christmas, we spoke with Brooke Averi, now in her fifth season as a Rockette, who shared some of her favorite local things to do in NYC. You can check out Brooke’s picks below and see her in person at Radio City right now for The Christmas Spectacular starring the Radio City Rockettes. Merry Christmas! A go-to bakery and café  "I discovered Bibble and Sip (253 W 51st, Midtown) when I lived in Washington Heights and would get off at the 50th Street subway stop. It became my go-to place to grab a snack and coffee before performances of the Christmas Spectacular. They have a beautiful array of pastries and unique coffee selections like a 'lavender latte.' A great spot if you’re in the mood for a sweet treat." A friendly local restaurant "The bar and restaurant Haswell Green's (240 W 52nd St., Midtown) is an NYC favorite. Mostly because of the live entertainment and friendly staff who have become family. Located in the Theater District, you can often find local professionals winding down after shows. If you’re lucky you may catch them spontaneously joining in with the band. Eati
